Our History
The LyricFind Foundation is the new not-for-profit arm of the Canadian company LyricFind Inc. (est. 2004), the world leader in authorized licensing, distribution, translation and monetization of lyrics in many digital applications. By creating a legal licensing solution to what was a new, unlicensed, unauthorized, and illicit market (online lyric and lyric translation display), LyricFind has been able to pay out millions of dollars each year in royalties to publishers, songwriters and other rights holders thus generating much ancillary revenues for labels, artists, songwriters, producers and music publishers.
In the past few years, LyricFind has dedicated significant time and resources to address other challenges in the sector, leveling the field for groups of artists facing major entry barriers and lacking representation and opportunities in the music industry. Since 2018, the company has led and collaborated in multiple language reclamation and revitalization initiatives focused on enhancing the discoverability, sustainability and exportability of Canadian and Indigenous music. LyricFind’s effort is supported by Canadian Heritage programs, Creative Export Canada and Indigenous Languages and Cultures, Red Music Rising and other Indigenous-led organizations.
LyricFind is currently one of 15 partners implementing the European Commission-funded initiative, BELEM (Boosting European Lyrics and their Entrepreneurial Monetization), with the goal of reducing the language barrier in music in Europe and beyond.
Our Approach
Online lyric display has become a growing business serving artists, songwriters, music publishers, platforms, culture, and music listeners globally. The LyricFind Foundation leverages strategic partnerships and emergent technologies within the music and digital media in benefit of this ecosystem. The impact of today’s dominant streaming economy has produced a glocalization” effect: with lower entry barriers, artists and fans can more easily connect in their local cultures. We identify and assess the impact of these and other emerging opportunities, in the creative ecosystem, and develop wise practices and initiatives in response.
